Sometimes when I express my opinion of interracial relationships, people get the wrong idea. The purpose of writing about this topic is simply to express some things that I have noticed about these types of relationships. As much as people would like to simply say interracial relationships will end racism, the facts proven that this is not true. I have noticed that even when couples get together across the race line, there sometimes still exist power struggles.
For example, many years ago there was a Brazilian soap opera that featured black actress Maria Ceiça as a woman involved in an interracial relationship. Her white husband in the soap opera didn’t want to have children with her because he was scared of the possibility that his children might appear to be black. When the couple finally had a child, in typical Brazilian fashion, the child was born with pale skin and blond hair. This scenario is typical because the racist dream of Brazil’s elite has been to slowly whiten the population at least since the abolition of slavery in 1888.
Other studies reveal that when a child is born in Brazil, many families express the idea that a child is lucky when he or she is born with European features but will have a hard life if he or she is born with features that denote African ancestry. As writer bell hooks has noted, this is typical of African-Americans also. I remember a few years ago, one of my cousins explained the pride she felt when her first daughter was born with light brown skin. On the other hand, she described her second daughter, who was born with darker skin, as a monkey.
As I wrote in my previous post, interracial marriage does not represent the end of racism. For instance, although I haven’t done any official research, several years ago I discovered another clue that there are power struggles within interracial marriages that produce children. Since the mid 1990s, many mixed race men who have white mothers have shared with me the fact that their mothers insist that they don’t date or marry black women. So although a white woman marries or has a child with a black man, some white women apparently think of themselves as being superior to black women.
It is also true that many white parents try to give their mixed race children the priviledge of whiteness in order that their children may be accepted as being better than “regular” black children. I have known several incidents where a biracial child is told by their white parent that when they experience racism, they should tell people that their mother is white.
Many Americans and Brazilians ask why Barack Obama calls himself black instead of mixed race. Obama explained his choice of identity perfectly. Although his mother was a white woman, the world sees him and treats like a black man. Although Brazilians always claim that racism doesn’t exist or occurs far less than in the EUA, the fact is it is dependent upon if the appearance of a mixed race person is closer to Europe or Africa.
In Brazil, because the middle class is overwhelmingly white, when black people achieve middle class status, there are usually very few black people in their neighborhoods or social circles, thus many end up marrying whites. Because of the continuous mixture of middle class blacks with whites, the association of whiteness and wealth and blackness and poverty remains the same. For this reason, many whites claim that the existence interracial marriages signify the inexistence of racism. I disagree. In the middle classes, when blacks marry whites, two or three generations in the future, the appearance of their family becomes white. In my view, this is not the inexistence of racism; it is a situation where whites know that white supremacy and domination will never be challenged by black middle-class ascension.
It is also true that many whites who are married to blacks or other minorities seem to believe that the race issue suddenly disappears simply because they are married to a non-white person. This is one of the main problems that need to be discussed. I have heard many white women complain that when their children choose a black identity or identify with black culture, they (white women) feel as if they don’t exist. My response? The power structures of American and Brazilian societies are dominated by whites. When a white person decides to marry and/or have children with non-white people, he or she should understand that unless his or her child appears to be white, that child will be considered non-white by society. If that white person cannot accept the racial hierarchy, maybe they should not marry and have children with non-whites. The intent should be to destroy racial classification and thus racial hierarchy. If a white person only wants to fight for their particular child to not be classified as black, their true interest is not really racial equality but rather an alteration of the racial hierarchy with “regular” black people remaining on the bottom.
